The omnipresence of oriental rugs throughout the Eastern and Western World has progressively led to the recognition of their concealed messages, inherited from antique civilizations.
For the nomad tribes who lived - and still live - under the tent, rug weaving was - and still is - a life basic necessity and their looms (horizontal) have at all times followed them in their moves.
Once a tribe has elected a new territory, it makes use of its beautiful rugs as « markers ». The design of the tribal rug is generally sacred, and it is upon this sacred floor covering that the tent is subsequently erected. Thus, however inhospitable their new environment in this foreign land, the rug with its inherited, traditional design, creates what the English call « a home from home », isolating them from the rough, humid earth underneath and dangers all around.
Protective as it is, the rug has a « motherly » quality to it. For the nomad tribes, the rug is « mother earth », but « native earth » as well. Although erring about may lead tribesmen to sleep every night in a different surrounding, their displacements are made in the company of a symbolical territory. |
